File size limits

250 GB Maximum file size

Data is mirrored in at least two datacenters. SharePoint online Backups are performed every 12 hours and retained for 14 days.

Data hosting location

Sharepoint data is stored in Canadian servers.

Sharing capabilities

Files and folders can be shared with other SharePoint members with differing levels of permissions. Files and folders can also be shared externally with links. Microsoft Office documents can be worked on collaboratively.

For more information on permissions in SharePoint see the McMaster Getting Started with SharePoint document (login with MacID required)

Example use case

SharePoint is a great data storage solution for collaboration and research group management. You can set up a SharePoint site for your research group and files will be owned by the SharePoint rather than any one individual. Research group members such as graduate students, undergraduate students, postdocs, staff, and external collaborators can be easily added to give them access to the files and removed when they leave the group or no longer need access.

Contact

SharePoint is administered by UTS. Users can also access Training Sessions and Consultations provided by UTS.

How to get started

You can create a SharePoint Site through Teams by creating a Team. It will automatically create a SharePoint site which you can use with or without the associated team. UTS provides information on how to get started and create a team.

If you need a communications SharePoint site or you would like a SharePoint site without an affiliated Team, you can request that through McMaster UTS.

Technical Complexity

High

Access protocol

SharePoint is primarily accessed through the web or by syncing a SharePoint site with the desktop or mobile OneDrive app.
