Data Management Plan Database

A Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how you will manage, store, secure, document, and share research data. DMPs can vary broadly across disciplines, methodologies, and data types. DMPs are a growing requirement for grants, and can also guide data practices for individuals and teams. DMP Assistant is a free webtool that guides you through drafting your DMP and the easiest way to start building a DMP.

Our database gathers examples from across the world including DMPs from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Qualitative DMP Competition, DataOne, Digital Curation Centre, Liber, the Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance, and UC San Diego Research Data Curation into one searchable, open-access platform.

National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI); Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP from the NHGRI aims to collect data from 3000 surveys and 100 interviews with patients, healthcare providers, and industry professionals. This will take the form of survey data, coding schemes, voice recordings, interview transcripts, and metadata.
University of Alabama Birmingham; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This is an example DMP that aims to collect quantitative postpartum data from 60 obese/overweight women.
University of Alabama Birmingham; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance

This is a sample DMP that will be collecting quantitative data to develop a novel database for the new genome sequencing data for the pathogen, streptococcus pneumoniae.

University of Alabama Birmingham; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This is an example DMP that aims to collect gene and protein expression data to assess DNA methylation and its impact on cardiac function.
University of Alabama Birmingham; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This is a sample DMP that retrospectively analyzes human cases of bacterial infections to create a database of clinical cases, bacterial infections, genomic sequences, etc.
University of Virginia; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect data in the form of various file-types in order to identify areas of poor civic infrastructure and build community partnerships to address them.
University of Minnesota; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This is an example DMP for public health research involving secondary data analysis and data use agreements.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
This is a sample data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NIMH, presenting a proposal to perform secondary analysis on data collected from human subjects.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

This sample data management and sharing plan proposes a secondary data analysis of existing kidney magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. This secondary data will be accessed from the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP). The goal of this research is to produce a clinical dataset of kidney volume, estimated using a neural network.
