Data Management Plan Database

A Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how you will manage, store, secure, document, and share research data. DMPs can vary broadly across disciplines, methodologies, and data types. DMPs are a growing requirement for grants, and can also guide data practices for individuals and teams. DMP Assistant is a free webtool that guides you through drafting your DMP and the easiest way to start building a DMP.

Our database gathers examples from across the world including DMPs from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Qualitative DMP Competition, DataOne, Digital Curation Centre, Liber, the Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance, and UC San Diego Research Data Curation into one searchable, open-access platform.

McMaster University
This data management plan template is designed to facilitate group collaboration among a diverse range of stakeholders, including artists, researchers, research participants, social service workers, community organizers, and community workers. It is intentionally crafted in plain language to facilitate accessibility and understanding for all parties involved. Additionally, it frames the process as conversation as opposed to a more traditional form, fostering relational approaches to interdisciplinary collaboration.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

This is an example of a data management plan from the NIH, intended to collect genomic data and subsequent phenotype data from cancerous mice models.

McMaster University
This DMP aims to collect info data, raw data, processed data, analyzed data, and report data. The goal of the project is to build a research and technology center to develop high-performance methods for biosensing and bioimaging.
Texas A&M University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP outlines a plan for experimental testing, characterization, and simulation data for experiments with nickel-titanium shape memory alloys using a laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing process. This includes thermal and precipitates evolution physics based modelling.
Newcastle University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP will collect data on "audio-recordings of conversations during workshops", observational notes, summary of main points, and videos generated by study participants to answer the research question.
University of Alberta; Digital Research Alliance of Canada

This is a template DMP for mixed-methods research where data is obtained from surveys and qualitative interviews/focus groups.

University of New Brunswick; Digital Research Alliance of Canada
This is a template DMP for use in projects that combine scientific methods with computer simulations/modelling to study molecular interactions.
Cégep de Sherbrooke; Digital Research Alliance of Canada

This DMP aims to collect digital, tabular, and graphic data on plastic production parameters, environmental conditions, and inspectional measures among other factors to optimize the industrial extrusion process.

University of Waterloo; Digital Research Alliance of Canada
This DMP aims to collect photographs, Raman data, and lab data to develop new and efficient techniques for synthesizing two-dimensional perovskites at lower temperatures.
National Institute on Aging (NIA); Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This is a DMP for a hypothetical drug discovery including intellectual property using mice: chemical structures, workflows, medicinal and analytical chemistry, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and PET imaging. Data and protocols are proposed to be shared in PubChem and AD Knowledge Portal.
Johns Hopkins University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect data on viruses and viral infections in the ocean to better understand which bacteria viruses infect. To do this, the researchers are developing a "high-throughput technique to identify cultures in the environment."
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
This is a sample data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NICHD, that describes a plan to create and preserve biological data from different types of fish embryos.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

This is a sample data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NIMH, presenting a proposal to collect and analyze genomic, phenotypic, and clinical data from human subjects.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK); Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance

This example DMP aims to collect genomic and phenotypic data from 36 human subjects.

National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
This is a sample data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NIMH, presenting a proposal to collect and analyze genomic data from animal (mice) and human subjects.
ISPA; CRL
This DMP was created for the HOME_EU project which studies homelessness. The DMP outlines the collection of interview data from 5,600 expected adults across 8 countries.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

This is an example of a data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NICHD, that details a plan to collect and deidentify clinical, laboratory and genomic data from 1000 participants.

National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Human Genome Research Institute Home (NHGRI)

This is a sample data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NHGRI, that provides an outline for a project involving human genomic and clinical data.

Newcastle University
This DMP aims to collect survey data from a minimum of 30 participants for the purpose of identifying higher order therapy skills.
Universität Passau
This DMP was created for the MARIO project, which aims to use service robots to manage active and healthy aging. This DMP will outline the collection of survey data, patient profile information, and robot interaction datasets.
MaX Consortium
This DMP was designed for the European Centre of Excellence in materials modeling, simulations and design. It aims to collect code and simulation data.
University of Alberta; Digital Research Alliance of Canada

This is a DMP example for a fictional research study that will use a mixed-methods approach to collect participant data from interviews, surveys, and focus groups. This example uses the new Alliance Simplified Template (Funding Application Stage) which focuses on 5 questions that are helpful for a DMP that meets new Tri-Agency requirements.

National Science Foundation (NSF)
This DMP was created by the NSF as a template for Engineering.
Monash University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This large-scale project aims to generate an integrated model of primary healthcare for refugee clients in Australia. Their DMP is an excellent example of an in-depth process-based DMP that outlines governance, organization, documentation, and storage for all data types, and sharing and access (including how requests should be made).
