Data Management Plan Database

A Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how you will manage, store, secure, document, and share research data. DMPs can vary broadly across disciplines, methodologies, and data types. DMPs are a growing requirement for grants, and can also guide data practices for individuals and teams. DMP Assistant is a free webtool that guides you through drafting your DMP and the easiest way to start building a DMP.

Our database gathers examples from across the world including DMPs from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Qualitative DMP Competition, DataOne, Digital Curation Centre, Liber, the Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance, and UC San Diego Research Data Curation into one searchable, open-access platform.

This DMP investigates Afro-descendant movement in Latin America and subsequent self-determined collectives using participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and participatory workshops.
Bard Graduate Center; Open Anthropology Research Repository
This DMP aims to collect digitized materials, fonts, search algorithms, and software. The digitized materials will consist of historical and recent photographs, newspaper clippings, sound recordings, video clips, interviews, published essays, narratives, and songs.
McMaster University
This data management plan template is designed to facilitate group collaboration among a diverse range of stakeholders, including artists, researchers, research participants, social service workers, community organizers, and community workers. It is intentionally crafted in plain language to facilitate accessibility and understanding for all parties involved. Additionally, it frames the process as conversation as opposed to a more traditional form, fostering relational approaches to interdisciplinary collaboration.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

This is an example of a data management plan from the NIH, intended to collect genomic data and subsequent phenotype data from cancerous mice models.

Open Anthropology Research Repository

This DMP aims to collect 3D digital data, algorithms for shape analysis, publications, and conferences.

National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

This is an example of a data management plan from the NIH, intended to collect clinical, demographic, and dialysis data from research participants.

CRACKER Consortium
This DMP was created in accordance with the project CRACKER, which aims to “crack the language barrier”. The DMP outlines the collection of various forms of data including, text, audio, video, machine-readable dictionaries, terminological resources, and computational grammars.
Open Anthropology Research Repository

This DMP is curated to document 20 – 25 digital stories depicting Detroit’s ethnic histories. The data collected will include a combination of digital images, audio and video.

Open Anthropology Research Repository

This DMP aims to collect survey data, digital scans, transcriptions, and fieldnotes from observations.

Digital Research Alliance of Canada; University of Waterloo

This DMP example show uses a case study of relativistic astrophysics and gravitational physics data to show how management strategies can support computational reproducibility in High-Performance Computing. Data are the inputs and outputs of the numerical simulation model.

Digital Research Alliance of Canada; Université de Montréal
This is an example data management plan from the Alliance which describes a fictional research project which involves the collection of soundscapes from monasteries. The fictional researcher intends to collect audio data (WAV files) in order to facilitate analysis.
University of Calgary; Digital Research Alliance of Canada

This is a template DMP for use in systematic review projects in any field.

University of Ottawa Heart Institute; Metaresearch and Open Science

Developed by researchers for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, this guidance and worked example extracts examples from Beck, Leblanc, and Morissette's systematic review protocol on depression screening of children and adolescents. It outlines a data management plan for a systematic review study.

University of Ottawa Heart Institute; Metaresearch and Open Science

Developed by researchers for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, this guidance and worked example outlines a data management plan for a pre-clinical laboratory animal study. This DMP outlines a project to explore stroke treatments using biocellulose duroplasty with rat subjects.

University of Ottawa Heart Institute; Metaresearch and Open Science

Developed by researchers for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, this guidance and worked example outlines a data management plan for a randomized controlled trial conducted with 100 human participants. Demographic data will be collected from participants, and then other data is collected by an electroencephalogram, electroculogram, electromyogram, as well as video and sound.

Louisiana State University; Open Anthropology Research Repository
This DMP aims to collect coastal hazard data, GIS shape files and data, social-economic data, and demographic data. This data will be used for investigating population changes in a vulnerable coastal environment.
University of Ottawa Heart Institute; Metaresearch and Open Science

Developed by researchers for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, this guidance and worked example outlines a hypothetical genomic study into acute lymphoblastic leukaemia using blood drawn from patients, healthy volunteers, and mouse models.

University of Helsinki (UH)
This DMP was created for the HERCULES project, which aims to perform single-cell analysis to characterize and target high-grade serous ovarian cancer.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Human Genome Research Institute Home (NHGRI)

This is a sample data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NHGRI, that provides an outline for a project involving human genomic and clinical data.

Temple University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect audio recordings, surveys, and observations to revitalize and endangered language.
Open Anthropology Research Repository

This DMP aims to collect texts, transcriptions, photographs, visual materials, audio, and translations.

Montreal Neurological Institute

This DMP aims to collect reaction time, choice, and eye-tracking data which will be used for a mock behavioral and eye-tracking project.
