Data Management Plan Database

A Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how you will manage, store, secure, document, and share research data. DMPs can vary broadly across disciplines, methodologies, and data types. DMPs are a growing requirement for grants, and can also guide data practices for individuals and teams. DMP Assistant is a free webtool that guides you through drafting your DMP and the easiest way to start building a DMP.

Our database gathers examples from across the world including DMPs from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Qualitative DMP Competition, DataOne, Digital Curation Centre, Liber, the Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance, and UC San Diego Research Data Curation into one searchable, open-access platform.

This is a set of sample DMPs produced by the Rice Research Data Management Team containing a preamble explaining recommended content and two Sample DMPs for Biosciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental (CRIA); Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to fill in and identify taxonomic and geographic information gaps of plants and fungi in Brazil.
California Ocean Science Trust
This DMP was created for California’s Statewide MPA Monitoring Program, collecting four levels of data. Data types include ecological data, fisheries landings data, environmental data, field and measurements.
Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect data on factors like wave height, temperature, etc. to create a dataset in order to better understand how the Kelp Forest Ecosystem responds to climate change and local disturbances.
Digital Research Alliance of Canada; University of Waterloo

This DMP example show uses a case study of relativistic astrophysics and gravitational physics data to show how management strategies can support computational reproducibility in High-Performance Computing. Data are the inputs and outputs of the numerical simulation model.

Digital Research Alliance of Canada; University of Waterloo
This is a data management plan example created by the Ecohydrology Research Group at the University of Waterloo. It presents a sample DMP for research work within the field involving laboratory, chemical, biological and numerical data.
University of the Virgin Islands; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP details a student research program that aims to build international research capacity in learners.
Lincoln University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect data non-native plant species in New Zealand to determine the impact climate limitations have on their growth/numbers.
University of Victoria
This DMP is created for the Groundwater Science and Sustainability Research Group at the University of Victoria. The DMP aims to collect various forms of data, with an emphasis on geospatial data, and is inspired by the ecohydrology specific DMP template at UVic.
University of Saskatchewan; Digital Research Alliance of Canada
This is a template DMP for research project utilizing technology and/or software for application in healthcare and medicine.
Leiden University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This is a DMP template for researchers at Leiden University, The Netherlands. It has a checkbox format instead of a paragraph format which could be useful for certain researchers.
University of Alberta; Digital Research Alliance of Canada

This is a template DMP for mixed-methods research where data is obtained from surveys and qualitative interviews/focus groups.

University of New Brunswick; Digital Research Alliance of Canada
This is a template DMP for use in projects that combine scientific methods with computer simulations/modelling to study molecular interactions.
