Data Management Plan Database

A Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how you will manage, store, secure, document, and share research data. DMPs can vary broadly across disciplines, methodologies, and data types. DMPs are a growing requirement for grants, and can also guide data practices for individuals and teams. DMP Assistant is a free webtool that guides you through drafting your DMP and the easiest way to start building a DMP.

Our database gathers examples from across the world including DMPs from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Qualitative DMP Competition, DataOne, Digital Curation Centre, Liber, the Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance, and UC San Diego Research Data Curation into one searchable, open-access platform.

Harvard University
This DMP aims to collect survey data in pdf, video, and image formats. This data will be collected for the SMART trial, in efforts to study mental and reproductive health in teens.
UC San Diego; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This is a data management plan from UC San Diego which details a strategy to collect and analyze raw data.
National Institute on Aging (NIA); Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This sample DMP aims to collect data from an accelerometer, surveys, and semi-structured interviews from 250 participants.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)
This is an example of a data management plan from the NIH, intended to collect anthropologic and public policy data from surveys and interviews.
National Institute on Aging (NIA); Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) aims to add to an existing longitudinal project by conducting another wave of data collection from 13 000 web-surveys and 200 health exams. This will be shared under a restricted use agreement.
National Institutes of Health (NIH); National Human Genome Research Institute Home (NHGRI)
This sample data management plan from the NIH, intended for submission to the NHGRI, outlines a technology development project that will collect nanospore sequence data, whole genome sequence data, and RNA sequence data from 20 human cell lines via a biobank.
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance

This DMP aims to collect data on nonrandomized observational population studies to identify gaps in study design and data collection methods to make it more standardized.

UMC Utrecht
This DMP aims to collect a pseudonymized/anonymized dataset from a minimum of 28 patients from the department of Ophthalmology. This data will be used in the effort of analyzing the visual outcome of children after epilepsy surgery.
UMC Utrecht
This DMP aims to collect patient data and medical records for the efforts of assessing whether patient-specific implants for acetabular fracture surgery result in a more accurate reconstruction.
University of Manchester
This DMP aims to collect interview data, which will be used to understand barriers and facilitators to hearing aid use in teenagers.
Arizona State University; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect wet-lab cellular data in order to assess to the role of developmentally partitioned proliferative components in brain tumor glioblastomas.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect data from experiments "using a unique imaging system to probe how a polymeric jet injected into a surrounding Newtonian fluid becomes unstable."
University of Arizona; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP will use longitudinal speech data of cancer survivors from another study to develop a Machine Learning model that can increase participant compliance with health lifestyle habits.
McMaster University

This is a student data management record created by the vascular dynamics lab. Although it was created for students working within this lab and is structured for kinesiology related research, it has broad applicability as an exit protocol for labs working across Natural and Health Sciences.

Broad Institute; Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance
This DMP aims to collect virome data in order to characterize the biological features of viruses commonly found in humans.
University of Warwick, NIH
This protocol was created for the VITAL trial which aims to investigate volatile and total intravenous anesthesia for major non-cardiac surgery. The main form of data collected is clinical data, and the management of said data is available in section 5 of the protocol.
Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory; Defense Technical Information Centre
This DMP was created for the WIAMan Biomechanics team. They collected data for bio fidelity and skeletal injury risk assessment capability. The data collected includes specimen sensor data, rig sensor data, kinematics data, radiography, photography, videos, and documentation.
University of Manitoba; Digital Research Alliance of Canada

This DMP aims to collect clinical data for 1000 women for an observational study to assess the effectiveness of a cardiovascular screening program and identify any potential biomarkers that are predicative for cardiovascular disease.

University of Glasgow
This DMP aims to collect data from semi-structured interviews and a qualitative diary study. This project aims to evaluate how sexual wellbeing is experienced during adolescence and emerging adulthood.
N/A
This DMP aims to collect survey data from approximately 100 youth individuals with a primary physical disability diagnosis. This data will be stored as numeric and tabular data and will be used to examine the health and wellbeing aspect of physical activity in this demographic.
University of Zurich; ETH Zurich; University of Cambridge; Digital Curation Centre (DCC)
This data management plan aims to extend an existing study on the same topic by creating new data from surveys. This DMP also deals with sensitive identifiable data and anonymization practices.
