Data Management Plan Database
A Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how you will manage, store, secure, document, and share research data. DMPs can vary broadly across disciplines, methodologies, and data types. DMPs are a growing requirement for grants, and can also guide data practices for individuals and teams. DMP Assistant is a free webtool that guides you through drafting your DMP and the easiest way to start building a DMP.
Our database gathers examples from across the world including DMPs from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Qualitative DMP Competition, DataOne, Digital Curation Centre, Liber, the Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance, and UC San Diego Research Data Curation into one searchable, open-access platform.

This DMP aims to collect data on coral reefs in the Gulf of Maine to better understand how they impact their habitat, their rate of reproduction, and how other marine life uses the coral reefs.
This is a sample data management plan from UC San Diego which details a strategy to collect and analyze data for research in the field of physical oceanography.
This DMP aims to collect hydrodynamic and ripple migration data to evaluate their impact of surf zone sediment transport and sandbar migration.
This DMP will collect data on "audio-recordings of conversations during workshops", observational notes, summary of main points, and videos generated by study participants to answer the research question.
This DMP aims to collect data from structured interviews and secondary data from COVID-19 hospitalizations and social distancing mobilization in Florida county health departments. This will be done in an attempt to understand "the roles and patterns of institutional collaborative mechanisms across scale and functions that are used to overcome collective action dilemmas produced by the COVID-19 pandemic."
This DMP collects histories and experiences of members of the Hispanic community in San Antonia during COVID-19.
This DMP aims to develop an annotation bank for day-long child-centric recordings that are already available to the research community based on an existing community data repository.
This DMP aims to utilize existing data to develop and disseminate a new software that researchers can use to access the Cloud in a more friendly manner.
This is a data management plan from UC San Diego which details a strategy to collect and analyze data for application in the field of oceanography.
This DMP looks at light pollution samples acquired by photometers followed by subsequent analysis.
This DMP aims to fill in and identify taxonomic and geographic information gaps of plants and fungi in Brazil.
This DMP outlines a plan for documenting, managing, and sharing code and (re-)interpretation of secondary data pertaining to protein localization and proteomics.
This is an example data management plan from the Alliance which intends to study the historical and cultural influence of Belgian and French immigrants to the Canadian Prairies. The data collected for analysis include text-based, image and geographical data.
This DMP aims to collect data on factors like wave height, temperature, etc. to create a dataset in order to better understand how the Kelp Forest Ecosystem responds to climate change and local disturbances.
This DMP aims to collect data to understand "educational actors cooperate or compete around the definition of knowledge that is worthy of circulation in an education dialogue."
This DMP example uses a case study of relativistic astrophysics and gravitational physics data to show how management strategies can support computational reproducibility in High-Performance Computing. Data are the inputs and outputs of the numerical simulation model.
This is a data management plan example created by the Ecohydrology Research Group at the University of Waterloo. It presents a sample DMP for research work within the field involving laboratory, chemical, biological and numerical data.
This is an example data management plan from the Alliance which aims to create a database of digital products from the Canadian Census of Population. The database includes text base data collected from Statistics Canada.
This fictional data management plan focuses on caring for mixed methods research through survey data, interviews, and focus groups. For the purposes of training, this DMP assumes data collected by the study will not be sensitive, and that participants have consented for their de-identified information to be deposited into a data repository in support of preservation and open research.
This DMP details a student research program that aims to build international research capacity in learners.
This example data management plan from the Alliance intended to analyze the availability and usage of affordable rental housing. The project requires the collection of various forms of numeric, audio-visual and text-based data collected from a variety of sources such as surveys, focus groups etc.
This DMP aims to collect data non-native plant species in New Zealand to determine the impact climate limitations have on their growth/numbers.
This DMP describes a plan for a study to collect data from academic profile websites--Google Scholar, Citations, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and ORCID--to understand the presence of librarian researchers on those platforms. Data collected for analysis includes textual and numerical data across different platforms and translated in to SPSS for analysis.
This sample data management plan from the Alliance aims to create a comprehensive digital database of women's contributions to print culture from 1750 to 1830. It uses data collected from a variety of digital databases and print bibliographies and uses a metadata schema developed by the authors.
This DMP will collect data on reports and incidences of sexual harassment in Egypt via crowdsourced reports, traditional field data, and social media conversations to develop a map documenting locations and instances of sexual harassment.
This DMP will conduct open data pilot case studies investigate, develop, and implement open data management and sharing plans.
This DMP will collect and make publicly available tobacco related data in certain African countries to increase research in this field such that a continent-wide approach to tobacco control can be developed.
This is an example data management plan from the Alliance which describes a fictional research project which involves the collection of soundscapes from monasteries. The fictional researcher intends to collect audio data (WAV files) in order to facilitate analysis.
This is a DMP template for researchers at Leiden University, The Netherlands. It has a checkbox format instead of a paragraph format which could be useful for certain researchers.
